In Amazon when an item is bought by somebody else, it shows under your cart as
not available any more or something like that.

Well, comparing bricklink to amazon isn't fair anyway. I'd rather have
carts expire than pay 15% in fees.

I don't think it is an either/or proposition.
Why can't we have a better cart AND lower fees?
Carts on BL absolutely should work like they do at most other places, otherwise
it confuses buyers.
Carts should be stored on the server, and they should be kept indefinitely.
This way I can start an order at work and finish it at home. I can also start
an order today and finish it next week.
Having an item in your cart does not reserve it for you, so the sellers inventory
is not effected. With the cart saved on the server, the system can track when
items go out of stock. So the next time you go in to the store, your cart can
show you the items still available AND the items no longer available. This will
allow you to order them somewhere else without having to try to remember what
is missing.
Once the system tracks what is no longer available in your cart, a ton of other
features could be added to the system. Like recommending other similar parts
that ARE available in the store. Or having an "add to wanted list" link on the
item. Or a "Look for item in other stores in which I have an open cart". This
would be helpful in reducing the number of orders you have to place.

+100 likes for this feature. I often browse during work breaks just to lose my
cart when I go home and would like to pick up where I left off. This may happpen
from a mobile device to a computer and vice versa.
I had a new buyer just complain to me about her cart emptying out and not understanding
that the BL cart works differently from Amazon or other online retailer.
If BL doesn't want to lose potentional new buyers and retaining them, they
should fix this feature.
I and many would much rather have this feature than a 3D part image or "Offical
Price" features. Those are nice to have, but not critical like this. Admins,
please take a note.
