So my question is, well, in the title. I think a lot of quality control issues happens during the pigmentation process. In the 90s, lego used pre-colored abs pellets, now it's all clear plastic that is dyed in-house by lego. So the product of the 90s was superior, but it had too many limitations in terms of colour selection and material cost. Lego also has a much, much larger parts catalogue now, with a lot more small parts and some of them really push the limit of the capabilities of the plastic. I recently bought a 1997 set that had it's box torn open but all of it's parts mostly sealed and had the opportunity to build a brand new, vintage set and it reminded me of how good everything felt back then. I think clutch power isn't as good as it used to be.

[...] Clear plastic. That does sound like it would explain things. What I know from transformers is that clear plastic tends to be harder and more brittle than opaque plastic. (16 days ago, May 11, 2024, to LEGO products)
