I'm browsing parts today and all of a sudden all pieces that were always
Flat Silver now are Pearl Light Grey. Those are two different colours, just like
Flat Gold and Pearl Gold.
If you hold two same pieces one from 2004 and one from 2008 they have clearly
distinct tints to them, especially in Bionicle. And in the transition years ~2006
some sets actually had both variants making them desirable by collectors.

There are actually three silver colours, and they were mixed up within the two
silver colours that are currently known in the Bricklink catalog.

The current changes are part of the effort to correct that.

Pearl Light Gray currently includes both colours you mention. The newer colour
has been separated out as Flat Silver. That was a first step.

Next, the lighter color will have to be taken out by of Pearl Light Gray. That
will be complicated, That will be complicated, because that colour briefly replaced
the other colour before LEGO reverted to the previous colour, because the appearance
of the colour depends on the material used and because sets are known to have
used both variants.

It is work in progress...

Please see https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1096

That page could use a few updates.

Bricklink now separates the Medium Violets. The only one that isn’t recognized
is the Little Robots color that isn’t really mentioned in the note.
BL Rust is known to be an error color.
131 Silver was reintroduced in 2006, not 2007.

This page should also include information about the Pearl Dark Grays and the
different Bionicle pearls until they are added. Too many sellers still have to
list 186 Metallic Dark Green under Green/Metallic Green/Chrome Green, etc.

I had not yet seen these new additional notes.
This is a very welcome replacement of the older version.
