| I found this variant of with blocky supports for the pins, which
makes it impossible to place plates beneath it unlike 30157. "40687" and "© LEGO"
are molded into it.
This was in a I bought in the last week. Checking build videos from
when the set was initially released confirms that the original release had the
thin, straight supports of 30157.
Anyone seen this before?

It’s in the Additional Notes:
This part has variants with multiple differences, most noticeably in the thick
supports at the bases of the pins.

This variant interferes with the functionality of the piece though, and isn't
shown in the variant images. Should its image and its new design ID be added
to the 30157 entry, or should it be considered a different piece entirely?

It doesn't in this set, but I agree it could in other sets.
There are different design numbers for this part:
From the instructions:
Element 4270882
Design Number 30157
From LEGO Bricks & Pieces:
Element 6351292
Design Number 40687
Both element numbers redirect to 30157 in Reddish Brown
The design number 40687 isn't found in BrickLink.
Brickset has 30157 in Reddish Brown only produced in three sets from 1999-2003
and then 40687 produced in 13 sets from from 2016 - 2021.
Rebrickable redirects 40657 to 30157.
There are a few options:
1. Add 40687 as an alternate item number to 30157
2. Add 40687 as a new part as a variant to 30157
3. Leave it as is
I'm leaning towards 2, but an admin should probably weigh in on that one.
It would affect the most sellers.
What is the number imprinted on your piece?

I should have been more clear - it is also not possible to place anything underneath
this piece even with a 1-plate gap in height. See step 72 of the set. My attempt
to push things into place caused the 2 underneath to pop off, despite
a 1x2 plate sandwiched between them and this piece.
The number molded into this piece is 40687. I checked my too and
it contains two 40687s as well.

Many thanks for letting us know about this new part variant.
So you are saying it is not possible to build the set
with this new variant that came in your set?
In that case the new type should definitely be added as a new entry to the catalog.
I think we don't need to split the older entry because 40687 is a *very*
new part. Sets from this summer still had the old mold:
https://youtu.be/QuUHYIEI-sw?t=321
And I would also suggest to contact the customer service, and please let us know
what they tell you about this issue. I'm very curious if they still have
the old type in stock and can send it to you. (Make sure to describe the issue
in detail otherwise I see a risk they just assume you got a damaged part and
send you the new variant again to replace it.)

This new variant will be getting added to the catalog very shortly. Thanks for
bringing this to our attention. New variants that change building possibilities
for other sets get top priority when it comes to having new variants in the catalog.

Is it a new variant though?
If another site has said that this part has existed since 2016, should we not
be checking the 13 sets (in reddish brown, not accounting for the other colours)
since then to see which part is actually included?
Those that inventoried the sets may not have realized there was a new variant
at the time. Especially since the new element number was linked to 30157, but
the new part number was not added as an alternate item number.

Another question to ask is what is the date code on this particular set. That
will also give an indication of the age of this particular part (in this set).

Yes. It's Element Number is in the 635xxxx range, which are currently or
very recently the range of numbers being used by LEGO for new parts.

The other site has wrong data. Brickset uses data that comes directly from the
LEGO replacement parts service, but the data is far from perfect. LEGO usually
only lists the newest variant for their replacement parts, so they list it in
all sets that they are currently supporting replacement parts for whether the
original set came with the variant or not.
And as part of our roles, we usually do check prior sets just in case.

| After 2 months of back-and-forth and sending me the wrong, new mold multiple

they ended up making an order with the new design ID anyway), I finally got 2

Many thanks for telling us about your experience. I had a feeling it would be
difficult to get the correct part from them because apparently they don't
differentiate between the old and new mold in their internal system. But good
to know they fixed the issue after all.
