Maybe not a legitimate source, but I have an incomplete used set that appears all original, no signs of anyone changing parts around...similar wear and variation on everything. It contains this variant.

FWIW, this request made me check: 1 only have 2 Black 3044 and they can only
come from 6067-1 and they are 3044a.

This comment is not related to this particular request, but to to the set in
question. I have this set from my childhood collection from the 70's and
up to ~1987. That collection doesn't have a single
