Your system seems okay to me. So long as you are not constantly annoyed by the
bag-in-a-bag-in-a-bag-in-a-bag setup. It is what I use and have done for many
years. The key to my system is that after I pull out that large bag and retrieve
what I need, I place that back IN THE SAME PLACE it came from.
For example, my box of regular tiles has big bags of the tiles in order from
1x1 to 1x8. I pull out the bag of 1x6 tiles, get what I need, then place that
bag back exactly where it came from. Most categories, of course, are more complicated
with so many different items, but I still make it work.
I have zero use for teeny-tiny drawers that waste more (vertical) space than
they are worth. They might look nice -- a wall of 800 tiny drawers or whatever
-- but it is not a setup I would ever be happy with.
For onesies and twosies quantities, I use cork boards -- The item goes in
a bag and gets pinned to one of the cork boards. I can find stuff in 4 or 5
seconds.
Most every item in my inventory is in pre-counted bags of 20 or 100 pieces --
or less of course. When someone buys 600 of an item, I can pull that lot in
about 8 seconds since they are already counted.
