Does the armor design itself have copyright or intellectual property rights?

I think it is fine. It is allowed to build a MOC out of LEGO pieces and to sell
the MOC (or instructions to build it) even if the LEGO pieces themselves are
the intellectual property of the LEGO Group.
It is like an artist making a painting. Even if the paint used by the artist
is the intellectual property of the paint company, it is okay to sell the painting.
