| I have some ideas on how to fix this problem.
Put a limit on the number of transactions allowed for new sellers.
One per day or 3 per week until established as a seller.
That would limit the damage done by a new seller.
I feel for the buyers that are not familiar with feedback system to spot these
styles of fraud.

| Excellent suggestion, and it's implementation should be accompanied by even more
measures, like proof of stock for these new sellers with many expensive sets
(or many sets in general), verification of the sellers details, etc. Maybe this
should be enforced for new sellers with an expensive stock, and not the hobbyist
sellers with parts and an occasional set listed. In any case it shouldn't be
so easy to scam people within BL. And speaking about BL, with so many transactions
taking place every day i think that they can afford these added measures. They
will benefit both BL and it's users.

| You are the perfect example of this.
You have a good starting inventory, very basic! Once you get some good orders
you will increase your stock! You will be at 10+ in no time, and one heck of
a seller.
Another person who is pulling a scam will open with $10,000 in hard to get sets
with 200,000 elements!
Now while that was real in our case, we would not have had any issue with completion
of some orders and good feedback before our 'probation period' was up!
And that would even be fine on a buy heavy account if need be. Opening a store
is difficult business! You could even put it in with the auto close idea after
X orders (I was reading up on some past suggestions)
Thank you, and welcome to the BL forum!

In my case - http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=510538 - the guy didn't
even include his full name. Surely there are some basic standards sellers should
meet?

I do not think this is a case of buyers not being familiar with the feedback
system.
It is more likely individuals, each willing to give a new seller a chance, all
initiating their orders BEFORE any of them posted any feedback.
But limiting the dollar amount a seller can collect, in uncompleted orders, at
one time, gradually allowing more as the seller generates more feedback, would
prevent someone from gaining too much by running a scam like that.
I think dollar amount of open orders would be a better control than number of
transactions.
Three per week, could have easily resulted in 6 customers, each taken for a large
sum, possibly even 9 or even 12 (depending on how fast the buyers realized they
had been ripped off).
I am the patient sort, willing to wait it out before leaving any sort of negative.
From overseas it can take up to a month (or longer as we are learning) for orders
to arrive.
So I think the dollar value of open orders is a better control factor than the
number of transactions.

And in discussion comes another possible good idea.
Maybe having a new seller limited to certain amount of overseas transactions
to keep that from blooming a long drawn our fraud may be good as well.
When I took over the shipping, I had no idea the complex nature of the overseas
postage!
My 1st overseas was a nightmare. No fault of the buyer, but I was sure I would
have got a negative feedback from it. Buyer was kind to me and did not.
I fixed it, and with the new stamps.com postage system, we do not have that issue
any longer!

| I agree that some sort of weighted $ value/# of orders over a period of time
should be enforced. I vote yes.
It is WAY too easy to start a BL store and list $10,000 worth just like it was
mentioned.

It kills me that people are always decrying "the nanny state", but every time
something bad happens they are all clamoring to enact some sort of system controlled
protection to prevent it.
Don't take big risks on untried sellers. If it sounds too good to be true, it
is. These are not difficult "rules to live by" and are self-regulating.

I've seen lots of good deals at low feedback sellers, I have tried several, and
so far (knock on wood) I haven't been scammed yet. But I do take precautions,
only placing a small order is the main way I limit the exposure to this type
of scam. If I lose a few dollar, not a big deal, and if the order arrives and
everything is excellent, I can place another order with them.

Take a good look at the people scammed by this person!
I do not see anyone with 10,000+ in their feedback rating.
You need to understand many people who purchase on this site are new!
Some are family people who's dad sets up an account, the kid picks the goods,
and Dad pay's for it.
If you have scam artists who open new stores under different names how in the
heck is a new person able to figure that out?
Most even have problems reading the splash page let alone figuring out the feedback
system.
I think it is the duty of the site to help protect these people.
If I am wrong, then so be it. But asking for something as simple as a probation
period, limited selling priviliges, or some kind of lock when 3+ disputes come
up in a day would not be too much to ask.
Thank you for letting me talk about this without locking it.
Needs to be addressed!
Just look at the original thread on this, and see how easy it would be for you
to fall into the trap if you did not know how the site worked.

I think a better idea might be to require members to spend a 'probationary period'
as a buyer, and establish a reputation before being granted selling privileges.
Alternatively, instead of a 'probationary period', it could be a certain amount
of feedback for buying.

It's awfully nice that you would like to enact these types of rules, when not
too long ago you were a new seller with a large inventory ready to go.
And there are plenty of questions, like what constitutes being a new seller?
If I decided to up and start selling today, would I be considered a new seller,
even though I have an established "presence" on the site? Because someone like
John P came along with some very nice inventory and sold it off quite well from
being a non-seller.
And what does "established" mean? You suggest widespread, deep changes and they
are usually vague. Does it mean 5, 10, 25, 50, 100? What? Does that feedback
include feedback as a buyer?
What stops a "probationary" seller from starting a handful of fake buying accounts
to meet this quota?
Troy is correct, if something sounds too god to be true, it probably is. No matter
what type of purchase you make here, eBay, Craigslist, you need to use common
sense and if in doubt, pass it up.
If someone wants to run a scam, they will.
I vote NO.

| I'll be a new seller soon. Yeah me . I would be okay with limits, I would also
be okay with credit card verification or anything else that would ease someone's
mind about making a purchase from me (the soon to be excited newbie seller).
I'd rather not buy more lego just to get feedback, but if I must, I must, although
after all the sorting I've done recently, I really, really, really need a breather.
I guess I've never been a fan of buying feedback and I do think there is a difference
between buying and selling, but I'm easy to get along with..just tell me what
I must do, and I'm on board (with a smile)!
